Still using pen and paper? Try finger writing!

Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to write in the air using your finger? Well, now it is possible. Just buy yourself a Kinect sensor and get started. The Kinect is an XBOX accessory, which can be connected to your computer. The advantages of air writing using a Kinect are that it is an environmentally friendly way of writing (because of the reduction in the use of paper) and that the system can be controlled wireless.

“How does the finger writing system work?” you might ask. Well, firstly, the Kinect detects a hand. Afterward, the geometric centre will be calculated and the hand will be tracked and recorded. Then, the recorded image will be compared with images in a database. Finally, if the image is recognised, the letter linked to the image from the database will be written out into a text file (Zeng, 2013).

Finger writing has two big applications. The first one is to teach children in a fun and interactive way. Pupils write in the air while pronouncing the letter. Unconsciously the children make arm movements that develop arm and shoulder muscles. All of this helps them with learning how to write by combining visual and motion memory.

The second application is to communicate with deaf and dumb people. For this communication, sign language is used (Nithya.S, 2018). Unfortunately, few hearing people understand this language. The same system can be used to translate a limited number of signs into numbers, letters words and even sentences. More research is necessary to translate signs formed with 2 hands or moving signs and to get rid of differences between native (sign) speakers and non-native speakers.

So, Air writing offers a great perspective on the way we communicate and teach. If this technology develops even more, we can start using it in combination with home automation systems in our everyday lives. It will make life easier, so you have more time to enjoy life to the fullest.
